Trois femmes d’origine chinoise se réunissent autour d’une œuvre créée par l’une des leurs : l’adaptation de la pièce Les Bonnes de Jean Genet. Pendant qu’elles cuisinent et regardent la vidéo, elles parlent sans complexe de leur enfance, de leur rapport amour-haine à la blancheur, de la colonisation de leur esprit, mais tout autant de la télévision chinoise, de la sauce pimentée, des rituels… et du Crazy Rich Asians. Elles discutent de l’évolution de leurs sentiments quant à leur identité; de la honte à la fierté en passant par une profonde inquiétude, en particulier dans un monde où la puissance financière et politique de la Chine est en hausse. Et pourquoi faire une adaptation d’une pièce d’un vieil homme blanc anyway ? Les différences entre les femmes et les tensions grandissent jusqu’à ce que le désir de vengeance déborde.

Le spectacle est aussi un gros doigt d’honneur à tous ceux et celles qui se moquaient de l’odeur de leurs lunchs à l’école.

Sophie, Meilie and Charo, three Chinese women, come together to make chili sauce and watch a video adaptation Sophie made of the classic play The Maids (Les Bonnes) by Jean Genet. Together as they watch the video – where two Chinese women play the maids and fantasize their revenge on their Madame – the friends speak candidly about their childhood, their love-hate relationship with whiteness, and Crazy Rich Asians. They discuss their evolving feelings about their Chinese identity; from shame to pride to deep concern, especially in a world where China’s financial and political power continues to grow. And why do an adaptation of a play by a dead white guy anyway? As the smell of garlic fills the theatre, differences amongst the women emerge and tensions grow until Sophie’s desire for revenge on whiteness boils over.

Bonnes Bonnes combines documentary theatre, live on-stage cooking, projections and movement to explore how we can heal from the wounds of internalized racism. The play is also a big middle finger to everyone who made fun of the smell of our lunches at school.
