Les Pitchs Porte Parole
I am happy to share that I will be developing my next show, People have to eat, for the annual Pitchs Parole event run by Porte Parole. The pitch will be on May 20, 2025!
The show is about myself, a theatre artist who is concerned about the climate crisis and my dad who immigrated to Canada from Malaysia to work in the oil sands. I was born in Fort McMurray.
Three Women of Swatow
“Women can’t afford to be cowards and Swatow women are fierce.” I am so honoured to be able to direct the first Asian-Canadian play Centaur Theatre has produced in their 50+ year history (about time!). Le Québec, autrement dit
Je suis heureuse de partager cette nouvelle inattendue : un extrait de Bonnes Bonnes est dans l’exposition « Le Québec, autrement dit » à la Musée de la civilisation à Québec. Vous pouvez m’entendre pendant que je lis l’extrait en français et en anglais. C’est une exposition permanente donc vous avez dix ans pour le voir ! 🙂
Tadoussac !
I spent twelve days in Tadoussac with Tamara Nguyen at the Glassco Translation residency run by Playwrights Workshop Montreal, translating Bonnes Bonnes from French to English. We were one of four playwright-translator pairs, along with Maud De Palma-Duquet and Danielle Le Saux-Farmer (translating Bénévolat), Evelyne de la Chenelière and Linda Gaboriou (!) (translating La traitement de la nuit), and Olivier Choinière and Bobby Theodore (translating La dernière cassette). Maryse Warda who I only met briefly previously as she translated Chimerica) was there as the onsite translation dramaturg and it was wonderful to be able to call on her experience and skilled ears. What an amazing time we all had and I saw whales! 😍
John Hirsch
I am grateful to be the 2024 recipient of Canada Council’s John Hirsch prize for directors! I am in excellent company with Olivier Arteau as the winner on the French side. Official announcement here.
Three Women of Swatow
This has been in the works for several years and delayed because of COVID so I am thrilled to finally share that I will be directing Three Women of Swatow by Chloé Hung for the Centaur Theatre in Montreal. It’s a dark and funny show about three generations of Chinese women as they come together to solve a very bloody problem. It’s also a story about legacy, about the strengths we pass on from generation to generation and how our ancestors continue to live through us. I am so happy that this will be my Centaur directing debut. The show runs November 5-24, 2024. Details here. (I look very old and haggard in this photo, eeeks!)

Un an en défilés
Veteran set and costume designer Eo Sharp and I have been making small, poetic, participatory parades in my neighbourhood Verdun, one a month for the last year. Our first parade was in March 2023 with Le défilé de la terre visible and we ended in February 2024 with Un défilé trop tôt. It was an incredibly rewarding but also very epic and exhausting undertaking! We met many neighbours and worked with many artists, lots of them Verdun residents. Chimerica
J’ai travaillé comme conseillère mise en scène pour ce spectacle au Théâtre Duceppe! Ce fut un grand plaisir de travailler aux côtés du metteur en scène Charles Dauphinais et il m’a donné l’opportunité de diriger les
scènes en mandarin. Malgré le fait que le protagoniste soit un homme blanc, il y a beaucoup de personnages chinois que les acteurs jouent avec beaucoup de dignité. C’était vraiment touchant de les voir sur la grande scène de Duceppe. Jusqu’au 17 février 2024. Photos par Danny Taillon
Bonnes Bonnes
Un pièce qui parle du désir d’être blanche dans la vie personnelle et artistique, du racisme intériorisée, et de la vengeance. À Théâtre Aux Écuries 11-22 avril 2023. Je suis sur scène avec Charo Foo Tai Wei et Meilie Ng. J’ai co-écrit le texte avec Tamara Nguyen. Et j’ai fait le mise en scène.
Duos en morceaux
Je suis l’une des huit metteures en scènes de ce projet par Théâtre I.N.K., parmis d’autres femmes extraordinaires. Nous avons créé chacune deux courtes scènes. Le public choisit les 6 scènes des 18 qui seront jouer chaque soir. Et j’ai la plaisir de retravailler encore une fois avec ma collaboratrice préférée, Jacqueline van de Geer. Marché Asiatique
I was invited to programme four short performances by Asian artists for the outdoor Marché Asiatique. While the public milled around and flames flared up from a booth selling bbq, Chinese seniors sang pop songs in Mandarin, Cantonese and Teochew and then a drag artist led a singalong to one of the most famous pop songs in Mandarin. Défilé d’insectes
As part of the research for Un an en défilés (A Year in Parades), Eo Sharp and I held a series of workshops at Maison des familles de Verdun and Centre sociale d’aide aux immigrants to make insect costumes and the project ended with a parade down a main street with around 100 participants in costume. Summertime is the time of insects but why do we value and protect some insects, animals and people more than others? August 2022.
Nuit Blanche: Histoires Tissées/Woven Stories
I am honoured to programme performances by three Chinese artists (Hua Li with Timothy Chan, Shijia Jiang and Wong Koon Ying) as part of a larger evening of performances by the Yiddish, Indigenous, and Québecois feminist communities at the Monument National’s Nuit Blanche event.
